Meet the Rooster: Dan Portman, account executive

In the latest instalment to our Meet the Rooster series, we chat to Dan, our account executive and resident gaming expert here at the coop.

Tell us about your Rooster journey so far, and how you got into PR…

I joined the coop at the tail end of last year, having previously worked as a researcher for a Bristol-based start-up that was building an app designed to connect innovative early-stage companies with suitable investors. I got my start in PR working with unsigned musicians across the UK as they looked to increase their exposure through print and radio. It was by far the job I enjoyed the most since leaving Uni and so I knew I had to return to the intoxicating, if not slightly stress-inducing, world of PR.

What excites you most about your job?

I would say the variety is what excites me most. That, and seeing an exceptional piece of coverage that you worked hard to push through appear.

Relive your most memorable career moment

I was lucky enough to attend the BRITs after party with my manager, Lewis, because our client Transparent Sound’s speaker was included in the artist goody bags. It was the eve of my birthday, too, so I got to see in my quarter century in style. They even named drinks after the artists, but I drank so many I can only remember one: Dark & Stormzy. Clever, right?

What have you been up to at Little Red recently?

Recently, I have been working on a lot of events and a ton of cool launches across the board. The Bookman new colourways, WD My Passport SSD, and the brand-new ArmorLock Security Platform are just a handful.

What makes Little Red PR so special?

Easy: the people who work here. I have worked in several places since graduating, but none measure up to the enjoyment I feel at coming to work each day. They are a hugely passionate, honest, and friendly bunch, and I really cannot see myself anywhere else.

Describe your happy place?

Lying on a massage table somewhere hot, with a cocktail close by.

Describe your work wardrobe?

Since starting here, I have been trying to spice up my wardrobe, because I am prone to wearing lots of blue as they make my eyes POP. But I do love a statement smart trouser and tucked in pale tee. I think this is my go-to look if you were to ask anyone at the office.

Top Instagram accounts you follow and why?

Just the one winner for me: @accidentallywesanderson – vibrant, scenic, and stupidly symmetrical. Counting down the days until The French Dispatch is released.

Do you have any advice for someone wanting to work in PR?

Get agency experience early on. Read widely and consistently. Work smart. Show willing. Develop a thick skin. Drink coffee or mainline Pro Plus.
