For the latest instalment of our ‘Meet the Creator’ series, we caught up with the lovely Lucy Gough, a renowned freelance interior stylist who is passionate about creating beautiful images and inspiring spaces. Alongside her day job, Lucy also runs a series of online courses to teach the average Joe or Jane how to become a professional stylist.

How did you get started in interior styling, and what titles have you styled for over the years?
I did my first work experience/school placement at Cosmopolitan magazine when I was 14 and absolutely loved it! (Even though it was mainly making tea and coffee and clearing out the storage cupboards, I still loved every minute). When I moved to London at the age of 24, I went straight into internships at World of Interiors, Country Living, Wallpaper* and finally Livingetc magazine, where I ended up staying for three years. We were like a family, and I am still very close to everyone from that time. Since going freelance in 2013, I have styled and written features for Homes and Gardens, Livingetc, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Times Style, marie claire, Country Homes and Interiors and Mail on Sunday’s YOU Magazine. I feel very lucky to have worked with so many wonderful titles, it’s my dream job!
Why did you become a stylist? Any advice for those interested in a career in styling?
I always loved interiors magazines and I wanted to transition from my career in book publishing to something more creative – so when I moved to London in 2009, I thought it was a good time to change career and follow my dream of being a stylist. I launched an online course last year to teach people ‘how to become a professional interior stylist’ and share all my knowledge of the industry, how to land jobs and build a portfolio!
What makes a good PR pro?
Someone who understands the magazine or title that I am working on and can suggest ideas accurately. Someone also who can turn around a press request quickly as I am often commissioned at the very last minute.

How do you see the media world change in the next five years? Has this been altered by the pandemic?
I think there is a lot more demand for anything and everything online. I think a lot of magazines will create more and more online content and I wouldn’t be surprised if some mags become digital only and stopped printing.
What has been your experience working with the Little Red Rooster PR team?
Always a wonderful team who are all so easy to work with. LRR are always super helpful and speedy with press requests which makes my job a lot easier!
What has been your favourite press trip / press event?
A posh night in a Chewton Glen cabin with the LRR team! Although I was pregnant so I sadly couldn’t drink the beautiful champagne that everyone else was drinking… but the most amazing location.
What makes a brand stand out for you?
Unusual, beautiful products, amazing inspiring imagery and an easy-to-use website!
