Katie Hing: One year a rooster

First up, let me just start by saying time really does fly when you’re having fun. I can’t believe that I’ve now been a Rooster for a whole year!

Little Red Rooster was always an agency that I had one eye on; they were local to me, had a fantastic roster of clients and smashed coverage targets out of the park. After getting to know the team whilst working at Sanderson Design Group, it confirmed my decision that I wanted to join them at some point in my PR career.

Vic and I had a chat about the opportunity over a couple of drinks at the Summer Showcase last year (as all good conversations start!) Fast forward four months and it was coming up to my first day. I was excited for a new challenge and ready to hit the ground running in my first agency role.

Over the past year, I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in some incredible launches, from Morris & Co. x Emery Walker to Smeg x Dolce & Gabbana, and many others in between. It’s been a journey and I’ve learnt heaps along the way.

In PR, relationships are your absolute bread and butter, whether it’s with a journalist or your client. Coming from a position where fabric and wallpaper was all I knew; I was apprehensive about hitting client targets outside of this area. Putting the nerves aside, I know I absolutely love meeting and getting to know new people, so I made it my mission to really understand my clients and their products to achieve some great results.

I’m chuffed with the coverage I’ve secured over the past year but my number one must be a half page for David Harber in the FT Weekend.

The idea of ‘cross-selling’ certainly is king for us at Little Red Rooster. We use our contacts to the best of our knowledge and get our clients seen in unexpected places. Another example is coverage I secured for Cambridge Audio in The Times’ Bricks & Mortar section, which came because of a direct relationship I had with an interior’s journalist. It’s amazing that this benefited one of our audio brands and introduced them to a totally new audience, generating stardust coverage we’ve become known for.

Back in April, we had our team offsite to Umbria and when I was tasked with organising the whole trip, I jumped at the chance. If you ask any of my friends or family, I am the chief of organising holidays. From finding the best flights, to the right location, I’m your gal. As a PR agency, April is great time for us to get away before we come into peak season in the summer. We work hard, but we know how to have fun with one another too, and I feel so fortunate we were given the opportunity go away together as a team to a stunning location. We all came away getting to know one another a little bit better.

Aside from team events, I’ve been part of some incredible client projects throughout the year too. PR events really do bring everything to life and drive standout results in turn. From product launches to panel discussions and everything in between, getting the brand in front of a journalist is instrumental in delivering results.  A highlight that stands out to me would be my first ever client event for Victoria + Albert Baths, where we launched the new ‘Lussari’ collection and hosted one on one press briefings with journalists across all key interior’s titles.  This really left media walking away with a full understanding and appreciation for what an incredible brand they are. Seeing coverage in Wallpaper*, Elle Decoration, The World of Interiors, Country Life and Livingetc for my first event felt like a big win!

Little Red Rooster is the perfect place to excel in your PR career; you’re given the opportunity to learn so much from your team, but you’re given the time to develop your own skillset too. As I head into year two, I feel super prepared on what to expect month on month. It’s a busy role but knocking coverage results out the park and having happy clients makes it all worth it.
