As we prepare for the dark, short winter days, for most winter is a relatively easy transition. However, for a number of people, this season takes a heavy toll on their day-to-day life. In the UK, 29% of the population are estimated to suffer from Seasonal Affective disorder – otherwise known as SAD*.
So, what exactly is SAD and what causes it? SAD is a depressive illness triggered by the lack of sunlight in the winter months. This can have a serious negative effect on key hormones (melatonin and serotonin) in the part of the brain controlling your mood, sleep and appetite – our circadian rhythms.
It is best to view this disorder on a spectrum as some sufferers may only have mild symptoms which we would associate as ‘winter blues’ – feeling grumpy, tired and generally a bit down. However on the other end of the spectrum, those who suffer particularly badly may have to take time off work and change their daily routines in order to make the winter months bearable.
But fear not! Many brands are offering products to help combat SAD – enter Nanoleaf!

Light therapy is seen as the most effective and accessible treatment for SAD. This popular solution can come in the form of lightboxes to dawn-simulating alarm clocks. Nanoleaf light panels can be used to both improve your sleep pattern and your mood. Programme the panels to wake you up gently to a natural sunrise, or improve your mood throughout the day with stunning colours that you can automate and switch up to your heart’s content. The importance of light for our day-to-day health and wellbeing is often overlooked; we recommend investing in some lovely light panels to transform your mood this winter.
