Meet the Rooster: Dom Whaler

I’m Dom, I’m from sleepy Oxfordshire but currently live in the (party neighbourhood) of Balham, south west London.

I recently joined the coop as a senior account executive after spending two years in automotive and audio PR. I’m one of the hybrid-working ‘reverse commuters’ on the team, enjoying a seat EVERY morning on the train to work.

Joining LRR is somewhat of a homecoming.

Born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and schooled nearby in Oxford, I went on to study French, Spanish and Business at the University of Nottingham. They were a great four years, and it gave me the chance to live abroad near Alicante in Spain and in Bayonne, in the heart of the French Basque Country.

Oxford boy at heart…

My occasional commute now takes me out of frantic central London to a more leafy, greener area in Twyford, Berkshire – surroundings I’m more familiar with from childhood.

I still remember my first sell-in…

The pandemic hit during a time I was working in a few contract and freelance jobs in marketing. At the time, I was still unsure about the industry I wanted to commit my career to, but knew I was destined for a creative field.

After some quick desk research and conversations with friends in the business, I quickly realised PR would be something I could get my teeth into. A keen eye on the news was one thing, but also that the industry is so results driven and that your output is so tangible and, often, global in the form of online or print coverage.

I still remember my first sell-in. The buzz from securing pieces of coverage within minutes of sharing a press release had me hooked instantly – and still does.

From then on I knew this was what I wanted to do, but how could I possibly combine this with my obsession with music? Audio, tech and music tech PR were foreign to me at the time but after much time spent looking into the best ways to marry all three, Little Red Rooster was soon on my radar.

I never really considered that I’d be able to use my language skills at work, however, at LRR I’m involved with multiple clients based in the ‘Hexagone’. Along with familiarising myself with another media landscape in Europe, it’s been brilliant to brush up on and converse in French in a professional manner once again.

Sport and music rule my life

My evenings, weekends and holidays are often spent going to gigs, attempting jazz piano at home, and watching or playing football.

A Fulham FC season ticket holder, I’m often travelling to various stadiums around the country and attempting to quickly shake any grievances from a resulting loss before returning to the coop on Monday.

I love discovering new places to eat and drink in London too. That said, there isn’t much better than frequenting my favourite watering hole by the river, the Duke’s Head in Putney.

The roosters work exceptionally hard at their craft

LRR do really great things that get them noticed. This is something I had spied from afar for some time.

Now here, it only takes five minutes with the team in Twyford to give you a sense of the speed, accuracy and sheer productivity that oozes out of the place. It makes it a great place to work and learn with people who work exceptionally hard at their craft.

I’m delighted to have joined the coop this year and am already in the swing of things working with many of the multi-award-winning technology and audio clients at the agency.
