Is tech serious about PR?

Being the proficient PR professionals we are, Little Red Rooster like to keep on top of the industry. Novel, we know.

Mynewsdesk has spent over a decade developing newsrooms across the globe and drew on this experience to devise their best practice criteria, testing 70 of the world’s leading tech brands against it. So when we stumbled across their white paper entitled Is Tech Serious about PR? As PRs serious about tech we were keen to discover whether the love goes both ways.

Sadly, it seems there is still a lot left to be desired when it comes to tech companies capitalising on PR. However, we did garner some positives from the report.

Instagram in particular caught our eye. For a platform communicating with images, story telling is always going to be a sticking point. However, they’ve overcome this by producing a weekly blog entitled “The week on Instagram”. It links you to all of their latest coverage, includes updates on current campaigns and lists what’s happening in different users communities.

We like this for a few reasons. First off it’s one stop shop telling the story of the brand, what the press think, what its users think, and what Instagram thinks. Secondly, we like to show off, so letting the world see how amazing we are in one place, weekly, puts a smile on our cheeky chops.

Whatever your opinion of Uber – they saved our bacon during the recent tube strike, saving us a ÂŁ100 and an 85-minute wait compared to a rather familiar London cab firm who shall remain nameless – they also make the most of the blog section on their website. Responding to the recent run of crises they have been embroiled in, Uber blogged about how they are improving their practices to plicate the reservations of those around them i.e their partnership with London taxi services.

However, having all of this information in one place does come with limitations. An inability to search content makes it hard to navigate. There is also no particular focus on the press and as a controversial company it might be a good idea to get them on your side. We like the idea of having an epicentre of all information about your company in one place, but the execution could be better.

One thing the report makes abundantly clear is the importance of blogging so it’s a good job we wrote this.
